Amazing Color Photos from Early 1900’s Russia

Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii

Peasant girls, Russian Empire. Three young women offer berries to visitors to their izba, a traditional wooden house, in a rural area along the Sheksna River, near the town of Kirillov; 1909 Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection (Library of Congress).

I have to remind myself that these were taken over 100 years ago. Amazing.

  1. Are you living in Russia? I was drawn here by the title, being a history buff focusing on European history and with a predilection for Russia’s history (I write about it all the time on my site too). I am also in awe that you are a scientist, with a creative eye for the arts. I was planning to write about this soon but I’ve been busy with work lately – you are an inspiration! Thank you for sharing this!

    • I don’t live in Russia, unfortunately, but I love that region. I actually have a fascination with many different cultures and their history/art. Many scientists that I know have either an artistic side or a deep appreciation for the arts. I think the minds between artists and scientists are very similar… And, thank you!

      • I’m so happy to have found your blog now that I read this!! ❤ I love the culture, history and art of Russia too! 🙂 Thanks and I'll be back to read more on your site!
